The EnDefense Strategizing Session was launched from June 9-10, 2015 at Hotel La Breza, Quezon City. The activity was a sharing and strategizing session by the grantees and potential grantees on their experiences on the ground with regard to environmental cases (especially the gaps and difficulties).
After the overview by Atty. Marlon Manuel (ALG National Coordinator), Mr. Aivan Herzano of the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE) presented FPE’s Environmental Agenda, which was used as a springboard for the sharing and discussion session on local environmental issues.
Atty. Manuel then presented the program needs and future directions. He stressed that the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation (PTFCF) has area-specific funds amounting to P 2M each for 5 areas: Sierra Madre, Eastern Visayas (Samar and Leyte), Bukidnon, Palawan, and Misamis Oriental. The CSO groups working on these 5 areas were urged to meet after the sessions to discuss their area-specific proposals.
Specific issues which the program is experiencing were then identified, after which these were clustered. After identifying a set of criteria for prioritization, the participants were then divided into Luzon/NCR, Visayas, and Mindanao, and were tasked to identify priority issues for strategic litigation for the environment. The outcome of the activity will serve as inputs for the next prioritization of cases and program steps.
