ENDEFENSE: BATAAN PARALEGAL TRAINING AND COMMUNITY MEETING

The EnDefense program conducted a Paralegal Training on Environmental Litigation (PLT) that shed light on concerns about coal plant operations last December 12-13, 2016 at Brgy. Mountain View, Mariveles, Bataan.

Participants of the 2-day PLT hailed from the Bataan Coal Free Network, an organized group of community members that face issues such as mining, coal pollution and unjust displacement.

The training held sessions about detrimental effects of coal to people’s health, introduction to human and environmental rights, the law and the legal system, and overview of topics concerning legal proceedings on environmental cases. These lectures were led by Ben Muni (Greenpeace Southeast Asia), Atty. Christine Antoniette Ramos (Alternative Law Groups), Atty. Anne Maureen Manigbas (Ateneo Human Rights Center), Atty. Maria Generosa Mislang (Tanggol Kalikasan), and Paula Vasquez (a recent graduate from the Ateneo Law School).

Cases concerning health risks due to coal pollution and land displacements were raised during the course of the training.
